In 1998 Maastrichtse Studenten Volleybal Vereniging Fyrfad (M.S.V.V. Fyrfad) was founded. As it is the only student volleyball club in the region of Maastricht, it’s main function is to promote student volleyball. Students who own a sports card of Maastricht University, which is distributed by UM Sport, can sign up to play volleyball.
The name Fyrfad is chosen because of its Old-Danish meaning: attacking. This fits volleyball very well. In the first years, Fyrfad started with about 40 members, but this number increased the following years. The last years, about 120 volleyball players represent Fyrfad, making it one of the largest student sports clubs in Maastricht. The members are divided over teams of various levels from beginners to advanced players. Furthermore, Fyrfad gives the opportunity to play at a recreational level but also at a competition level. Besides volleyball, there are also social events. Besides the social events at our pub, several activities like tournaments, members weekend, walking dinners, and more are organised. The grow of the club and the need for activities and social events demanded forming of committees and a board to keep Fyrfad going. Fyrfad gives every member the opportunity to participate in a committee or the board to gain experience at the origisational level.
